old movie effect

FROM THIS:

TO THIS:

1. Ever wondered how you could get that old movie look on a picture? I'll show you how! Start by opening up your image in PS

2. Go to Windows>> Layers, if you don't already have your Layer menu.

3. In your Layers window, right click on your base picture & select "Duplicate Layer"

4. Click Filter> Blur> Blur More

4. Duplicate your most recent layer. Click Image>> Adjustments>> Desaturate. Set this to Hard Light

5. LAYER> MERGE VISIBLE

7. At the bottom of your layers window, press the "create a new layer" button

8. Select paint bucket tool: . Press 7 on your keyboard (nothing should happen to your picture). This will simply change the opacity to 70%

9. With a black colour, click on your picture and it should be filled with an opaque black

10. Over in your tools bar, take the eraser tool: & set it to a size of 100px (or whatever suits your needs):

11. Go over the center of your photo - but not the corners

12. LAYER> FLATTEN IMAGE

13. FILTER> NOISE> ADD NOISE. Adjust settings to match mine:

OPTIONAL STEPS!

1. This step will add black bars to the top + bottom: Using the rectangle Marquee Tool - , select a bit of the photo's upper portion. Now holding the shift key on your keyboard, select an equal amount of the photo's bottom portion. Release shift key

2. Making sure your palette colour is BLACK, hit CTRL-backspace on your keyboard!

3. And finally, for that extra touch of old-movie, click IMAGE> ADJUSTMENTS> COLOUR BALANCE:

Shadows: -25, 0, 50
Midtones: -25, 0, 50
Highlights: -25, 0, 25
Preserve Luminosity: checked

FEEL FREE TO PLAY AROUND WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE IF YOU AREN'T SATISFIED WITH THE OUTCOME :)
